Early Life and Education
Mary Astor was born in a small town in Illinois to German immigrant parents. Her father had immigrated to the United States in the s. Mary received homeschooling, with her father as her main teacher and mentor. He not only taught her general knowledge but also instilled a love for the arts, particularly music. Mary learned to play several musical instruments under her father's guidance.

Mary Astor, born Lucile Vasconcellos Langhanke in Quincy, Illinois in , was an only child. Her father was a high school German teacher.
She was home-schooled and won several beauty contests before becoming a model in New York City.
In , at the age of 16, she appeared in her first credited role in a feature-length silent film for Selznick Pictures. Astor went on to appear in more than feature films through and received the Academy Award for Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in The Great Lie ().
She struggled with alcoholism for most of her life and was committed to a psychiatric hospital in the late s. After emerging, she converted to Roman Catholicism and began to appear as a television series guest star through the early s.

- Kenneth Hawks, film director, Widowed after her husband perished in a plane crash, she later suffered a nervous breakdown.

She led a pretty sad life when she was younger. The family put her to work early, living off of her earnings from making silent films. She was shipped her off to Los Angeles when she was She started in silent films, and luckily moved to talkies. She had a mature beauty that had her playing mothers in her early 30's. She had several husbands, every one a clunker, an overly controlling father that she broke free of, an independent spirit and a willingness to be a working actress versus a star.
