Who was Marion L. Starkey?
Marion Lena Starkey is the author of a number of history books. After working as a newspaper editor for the Saugus Herald and an English professor, she became a full-time writer. She began writing as a child, but did not take up writing full-time for many years. Starkey, Marion L. The Devil in Massachusetts. Garden City, New York: Doubleday& Company,
The Devil in Massachusetts describes in sequence the people and events that surrounded the Salem Witch Trials. It is written in a narrative format, making it very interesting to read. There are also many historical records and reproductions of the trials that make it somewhat accurate. The book tells the story of the accusers and the accused, the prosecutors and the defenders of the trials that stirred up Salem, Massachusetts. She wrote the book like a novel but adds that it is not fiction, it is American history. The way it is written makes it easy and very interesting to read, but leaves me wondering how much of the information is the honest truth. The theory surfaces that these bored young women, living in times that tended to be boring because life consisted of working to eat, were looking for some type of drama in their life. With this in mind we know that these girls took it to the extreme, considering the things they did and the many lives they ruined. The book is supposed to be a histo
The Devil in Massachusetts: A Modern Inquiry into the Salem Witch Trials
Marion Lena Starkey () was an American author of a number of history books. A New Englander born and bred, one of her ancestors, Peregrine White, was born on April 13, on the Mayflower off the coast of Cape Cod. She herself was born in Worcester and lived in Saugus, Massachusetts. Her education, too, is a New England one, for she attended Boston University (where she received her B.S. in and her M.A. in ), and the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. She has been a New Englander in her job, too. From she was an editor of the Saugus Herald, and nearly all of the Boston papers carried her freelance writing. To provide some variety, Miss Starkey also spent “six unforgettable months in R. H. Macy’s during a lean year of freelancing in New York” and two years () in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC). While in the Army, she added Casablanca, Algiers, Italy, Paris and Nice to such places as Russia, Czechoslovakia and Mexico, which she had visited in peacetime. Ralph William Starkey, age 84, of Florence, passed away February 15, Visitation will be Friday, February 21 at Williams Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until noon. The service will begin at Noon in the chapel.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Louise Elaine and Marion L. Starkey; brothers, Herman Dale Starkey, James Starkey, Harold Gene Starkey, Robert Starkey, Ronald Starkey, and Sammy Joe Starkey.
Mr. Starkey is survived by his wife, Patsy Lee Starkey; daughter, Melissa Abrams; grandchildren, Megan Vanderford, Thomas Charles Robinson, Jr.; and great-granddaughter, Aurelia Vanderford. Additional survivors include brothers, Morris Starkey (Donna), Max Starkey (Leigh); and sister, Judith Golitko (Michal).
Mr. Starkey had a passion for gardening and fishing and was a devoted member of Grace House. His greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren and great-granddaughter. He deeply treasured moments with his wife and adored his dog, Baby. He retired from Kokomo Opalescent Glass Co. and was a member of the National Guard.
