I have been in love with George Michael since I was 11 years old, back when he was half the duo that made up Wham!, and when he went solo, I attended my very first concert at age 14, during his Faith tour. As his music has grown and matured, so too, have I, all the while, remaining an ardent fan, and over the decades, his music continued to evolve and connect with audiences as only a rare few musicians can. Like countless others, I was heartbroken to learn of his unexpected passing last Christmas Day, and marking the one-year anniversary, I decided to read this biography, to see if there was anything about my favorite musician that I didn’t already know.

His rise in Wham! in the 80s was as effortless as it seemed, while his solo career, beginning in the 90s, was simply a natural progression of his maturity and songwriting skills. This led to his growing confidence in his abilities, and his belief that his contract with Sony was merely an extension of the one he signed as a desperate year old, not one that reflected his changing status, and he fought a losing battle with them in court to have that changed. George Michael — or more precisely, Wham! — was my first concert as a kid. I had harbored a long-standing and passionate sixth-grade crush on George (whose full Greek name, Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, I also knew), and I was certain he would somehow see me in my lawn seat beside my father and our fates would intertwine. (My father, who had mysteriously “volunteered” to take me to every George Michael concert of my childhood, had a lot more in common with George than I did, but I would not find that out for twenty more years.)

If my introduction seems personal, it is — and this book is too. James Gavin does justice to the gifted, tortured, closeted, and magnetic life led by George Michael, with a very specific focus on what Michael’s life — and death — meant to the gay community. At times heartbreaking to read, the through line of the book is both George’s immense talent and his darker side — George’s discomfort in his own beautiful skin, his self-destructive tendencies, his internalized homophobia, and his creative struggles. It’s 35 years since ‘Careless Whisper’ started George Michael’s solo career, a solo career which re-defined popular music.

And this year, George’s legacy has been further enhanced by the auction of his private art collection and by Last Christmas, the forthcoming blockbuster film based on Wham!’s hit ‘Last Christmas’.

March saw the auction of The George Michael Art Collection. The collection included works by artists from the Young British Art movement – many of whom were friends of George – including Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst and Bridget Riley. Before the sale at Christie’s, London on March 14, key works from the collection were viewed by the public in New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Shanghai. The entire collection, plus iconic videos made by George, was shown to the London public and, from morning to evening, the queues were around the block. All 60 lots reached their reserve price and the evening was a resounding success, continuing George’s philanthropy by raising funds for charities close to his heart.
