Biography

James Maitland "Jimmy" Stewart (&#;) was a highly acclaimed Academy Award-winning American film and stage actor, known for his distinctive drawl voice and down-to-earth persona. Over the course of his career, he starred in many films widely considered classics and was nominated for five Oscars, winning one in competition and one life achievement.

Collaborations with Hitchcock

After his work with director Anthony Mann, the second collaboration to define Stewart's career in the s was with acclaimed mystery and suspense director Alfred Hitchcock. Stewart had previously appeared in Hitchcock's technologically innovative film Rope, and the two collaborated for the second of four times on the hit Rear Window. Photographer L.B. "Jeff" Jeffries, the central character of the film, portrayed by Stewart, projects his fantasies and fears onto the people he observes out his apartment window while on hiatus due to a broken leg. Jeffries gets into more than he can handle, however, when he believes he has witnessed a salesman murder his wife.

Biography

James Neville Mason () was a three-time Academy Award nominated English actor who attained stardom in both British and American films.

Mason's distinctive voice enabled him to play a menacing villain as greatly as his good looks assisted him as a leading man. His roles include the declining actor in the version of A Star Is Born, a mortally wounded terrorist in Odd Man Out (), Brutus in the film of Julius Caesar, General Erwin Rommel twice, once in The Desert Fox: The Story of Rommel in , and in The Desert Rats (), Captain Nemo in 20, Leagues Under the Sea (), a suave masterspy in North by Northwest (), a determined explorer in Journey to the Center of the Earth (also ) and Humbert Humbert in Stanley Kubrick's Lolita (). One of his last roles, that of a corrupt lawyer in The Verdict (), earned him his third and final Oscar nomination.
