    Domenico Modugno was an Italian singer, politician and actor. Born in in Puglia, Italy, he was the youngest of four children. He performed at the Eurovision Song Contest three times, in , and , where he had nul points.

    At a young age, Modugno wanted to become an actor, and in , he was in an acting school. He was in a few films in Italy, and eventually became a manager to the comedy duo Franchi and Ingrassia, and got them into a long-running film career in

    Also in , Modugno participated in the Italian Sanremo Festival, (the festival that the Eurovision Song Contest was originally based around) for the first of many times, and won with the song Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu, also known as Volare. The song was a very big success worldwide, being awarded two Grammy Awards and having over 22 million sales. It was also covered by many world-renowned artists. Volare finished third on the night with 13 points.

    In , Modugno won the Sanremo Festival yet again, with the song Piove (Ciao, ciao bambina). This wasn&#;t as commercially successful as Volare, but on Eurovision night, he accumulated 9 points and came 6th.

    Domenico Modugno was an Italian singer, composer, actor, and social activist. He gained international fame in with his song "Nel Blu Di Blu Dipinto (Volare)" at the Eurovision Song Contest. Modugno is considered the first Italian cantautore or singer-songwriter. He was born on January 9, , in Polignano a Mare, a commune in the province of Bari, Italy.

    Early Life and Education

    Modugno's family moved to San Pietro Vernotico in the province of Brindisi when he was just seven years old. He attended elementary school there and learned the local dialect, which was close to Sicilian. He later went to middle school in the neighboring city of Lecce. From a young age, Modugno aspired to become an actor.

    The youngest of four children, Modugno was born in Polignano a Mare, province of Bari (Puglia) on 9 January His father, Vito Cosimo Modugno, was a municipal police commander, while his mother, Pasqua Lorusso, was a housewife.

    At the age of 9, he moved with his family to San Pietro Vernotico, in the Province of Brindisi, where his father was transferred for a new job position. Here Domenico attended primary school and learned San Piertro Vernotico's dialect, which belongs to the linguistic area of Lecce's dialect, which is similar to Sicilian. He attended secondary school in Lecce.

    From a young age he wanted to become an actor and in , after his military service, he enrolled in an acting school. While still studying he had a role in a cinematographic version of Filumena Marturano by Eduardo De Filippo as well as some other films.

    In his song "Lazzarella," sung by Aurelio Fierro, came second in the Festival della Canzone Napoletana, bringing him his first taste of popularity.
