MEASURING THE WORLD
Towards the end of the 18th century, two young Germans set out to measure the world. One of them, Alexander von Humboldt, negotiates savanna and jungle, travels down the Orinoco, tastes poisons, counts head lice and explores every hole in the ground. The other, mathematician and astronomer Carl Friedrich Gauß does not need to leave his hometown Göttingen to prove that space is bent, cannot imagine a life without women and yet jumps out of bed on his wedding night to jot down a mathematical formula. Famous and slightly eccentric with age, the two meet in Berlin in Gauß has hardly climbed out of his carriage before the two are embroiled in the political turmoil sweeping through Germany after the fall of Napoleon.
Daniel Kehlmann portrays the lives of two geniuses, their yearnings and weaknesses, their tightrope walk between love and loneliness, ridicule and greatness, failure and success with a great deal of humour and imagination. A philosophical adventure novel of rare power and brilliance.

In the early 19th century Germany ruled the intellectual world. Or more accurately, given that Germany didn’t yet exist, German was the globally dominant language of science, philosophy, and most other cultural pursuits. Measuring the World is a light-hearted docudrama of the intersecting life of two of the most important intellectual leaders of the period: The explorer and naturalist (and Prussian) Alexander von Humboldt, and the mathematical prodigy Carl Friedrich Gauss (an Hanoverian). Together they transformed human understanding of both things and symbols, as well as the connection between things and symbols. That is to say, they created a new language.
The backgrounds of these two men show that genius is purely genetic. Humboldt was a member of a well-fed, well-educated, and well-connected elite. Gauss’s mother, on the other hand, was illiterate and his father was a labourer. Humboldt survived a young brother who tried to kill him, and being raised by the servants. Die Namen Carl Friedrich Gauss und Alexander von Humboldt dürften alle schon einmal gehört haben und die meisten werden auch ungefähr wissen, in welchen Gebieten diese beiden Koryphäen der deutschen Wissenschaft tätig waren. Daniel Kehlmann hat diese beiden realen Figuren als Hauptcharaktere für seinen Bestseller Roman &#;Die Vermessung der Welt&#; gewählt, jedoch die wahren Begebenheiten mit fiktiven Anekdoten ausgeschmückt &#; eine sehr vielversprechende Ausgangslage.
Bei der Umsetzung haperte es dann aber ein wenig. Warum? Ein wichtiger Grund ist sicherlich der sehr gewöhnungsbedürftige Erzählstil von Daniel Kehlmann. Im gesamten Werk gibt es keine direkte Rede und daher werden alle Dialoge und Monologe entweder als Rede- und Gedankenbericht oder in der indirekten Rede wieder gegeben. Dies führt zu einer grossen Distanz zwischen dem Leser und den beiden Hauptdarstellern, die dadruch sehr unnahbar wirken. Auf der einen Seite wird so der Geniekult, der sicher ein Hauptgrund für den Grosserfolg des Buchs ist, gefördert, denn die beiden Hauptcharaktere werden so noch geheimnisvoller und unergründlicher.
