David Frank argues that Perelman's rhetorical approach is best understoodwhen seen through relationships between rhetoric and Talmudic habits ofargument. The Jewish concept Tsedeck (Justice) is taken as crucialto understanding Perelman's work. In Tsedeck, correct orientationsare reached by moving between the rational and the reasonable; judgmentsare made on a case-by-case basis by enactments of argumentation. In thisenvironment, pluralism holds forth without solipsism; the implications ofjuxtaposed traditions are worked out rhetorically. Community and audienceare brought to agreement t on values and justice via communication in anon-violent environment. Frank argues that this interpretation of the "NewRhetoric" places rhetorical practice in a position to redeem the radicaldangers of post-modernism. Chaim Perelman

PERELMAN, CHAIM (–), Belgian philosopher. Perelman, who was born in Warsaw, Poland, became professor of logic and metaphysics at the Université Libre in Brussels in He was also dean of the faculty of philosophy and letters and director of the Ecoles des Sciences de l'Education. Many of his early writings dealt with mathematical logic. In later years he was especially concerned with the concept of justice and with forms of discursive reasoning other than deductive reasoning.

A full statement of his theory of argument is presented in the two-volume Traité de l'Argumentation (), published jointly with Mme. L. Olbrechts-Tyteca. Some of his other major works are De l'Arbitraire dans la Connaissance (), De la Justice (), Justice et Raison (), and Rhétorique et Philosophie (). Sammen med L. Olbrechts-Tyteca () fandt han frem til, at den argumentation for menneskelige værdier, som han søgte, lå udfoldet i en glemt og fortrængt, klassisk lære: den aristoteliske retorik og topik.

Nyretorik

Resultaterne er fremlagt i hovedværket La nouvelle rhétorique: traité de l'argumentation (). Hermed blev Perelman foregangsmand for nyretorikken. Ved at betone retorikken som en argumentationslære genopretter han (imod Descartes og i modsætning til fagets degenerering til en lære om talefigurerne) det gamle bånd mellem filosofi og retorik.
