Born in Basra in , Wissam Shawkat is an award-winning artist and designer based in Dubai, with a focus on Arabic calligraphy and typography. His work departs from classic calligraphy, yet maintains its craftsmanship. Since he has been working on a new script named after himself (Al Wissam Style), and in recent years, he started ‘Calligraforms’, an art movement that merges the graphic qualities found in classic letterforms and western Abstraction and Cubism. Wissam has had many solo shows and has participated in many group exhibitions. His calligraphy and typography designs have appeared in several books and magazines about art and design.
Wissam joined Tashkeel in as Member He has run various workshops in Arabic calligraphy (–). He also exhibited with Tashkeel in ‘Hurouf Al Noor’ () and his solo exhibition ‘Monumental 11/11’ ().

Shawkat (AL-ee-ə SHOH-kaht;[1][2] born April 18, )[3] is an American actress and artist. She is known for her roles as Hannah Rayburn in State of Grace, Maeby Fünke in the Fox/Netflix television sitcomArrested Development (–; ; –), Gertie Michaels in the horror-comedy film The Final Girls, and Dory Sief in the TBS comedy series Search Party (–present). She also guest starred as Frances Cleveland, Virginia Hall, and Alexander Hamilton on Comedy Central's Drunk History.

Shawkat was born in Riverside, California, to Dina Shawkat (née Burke) and film producer Tony Shawkat.[citation needed] She grew up in Palm Springs.[4] She has two brothers.[5] Her father is an Arab, from Iraq.[1][6] Her mother is of Norwegian, Irish, and Italian descent.[7]

HE Sheikh Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi, chairman of the Sharjah Ruler's Office, inaugurated the "Journey of a Letter" exhibition at the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum.

The opening was in the presence of H.E. Mohammad Ahmad Al Murr, Chairman of Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Library Foundation, Salem Ali Salem Ahmed Al Muhairi Chairman of Sharjah Municipality Council, Asma Rashid Bin Taliah, Secretary-General of the Executive Council of the emirate of Sharjah, and Aisha Rashid Deemas, Director General of Sharjah Museums Authority.
Organised by Sharjah Museums Authority (SMA), the show runs from September 25 through November 30, comes in line with the Authority's mission to elevate the stature of Arabic calligraphy and art and reflects its commitment to offering platforms for artists and calligraphers through specialized exhibitions aimed at disseminating this rich cultural heritage to a broad local and international audience.

Wissam Shawkat: Transforming war images into art
Growing up in Iraq, Wissam Shawkat always had a passion for art. As a small boy living amidst the Iran/Iraq war, the s brought about visions that most young children his age should never be subjected to. As a form of escapism, Shawkat transformed these everyday war images into art and dreamt to pursue a career in the field, despite reservations from many at that time. Today he is noted as one of the Middle East’s most respected calligraphers.
As part of Dubai Art Season, Shawkat speaks to Khaleej Times about his upcoming public art show, ‘Calligraphy in the City’, which will run until April 21 along Dubai’s City Walk, giving passersby the opportunity to see the talented artist in action.
What is your earliest memory of actively involving yourself in art?
When I was six, I used to draw a lot. I drew war scenes, airplanes, things like that, because at that time in the 80s I was used to seeing those types of things because of the Iraq/Iran war that was going on.
