The talented designer behind a Japanese brand SOMARTA, Tamae Hirokawa, is a graduate of Bunka Fashion College and was mentored by one of the most famous designers, Issey Miyake. While working for Mr Miyake, Tamae Hirokawa created her own design firm called Soma Designs andSOMARTA was part of this umbrella organization that also included graphic design and sound direction.
Tamae Hirokawa specializes in creating seamless knitwear, which became an iconic product for the brand, and uses advanced technology in her textile manufacturing. Her designs "transcend time and open an innovative path toward the future of fashion" [from A New Era of Tokyo Fashion].

Tamae is also known for presenting the narrative elements of her designs in a form of film projections - created by Soma Designs - during the catwalk shows. At her famous Spring/Summer show, a meter wide panoramic screen transformed the runway into a train station platform. The show started with a train arriving at the station, and the i
Tamae Hirokawa’s fashion label Somarta (ソマルタ) was quickly embraced as an important new breed in Japanese design and soon seized the attention of the international press. As a former Issey Miyake team member, Hirokawa makes use of lace, masks, and macramé. She also displays a more conceptual approach to fashion design than many of her Japanese contemporaries.
Hirokawa joined Issey Miyake after graduating from Apparel Design at
Tokyo’s Bunka Fashion College in As a designer, she took charge of the collection line of both Issey Miyake men and Issey Miyake. Soma deSiGn was launched in March to create
fashion, graphic design, sound, and art direction. The same date also saw the concurrent launch of Somarta.
Like her mentor Issey Miyake, Hirokawa makes abundant use of advanced Japanese textile technology. Many celebrities have worn her designs, including Lady Gaga and Madonna.

Tamae Hirokawa is the lead designer of Japanese fashion label SOMARTA. Formally trained by Issey Misake and using more conceptual approaches to fashion than most Japanese fashion designers, Hirokawa has been hailed as a voice in Japan’s new fashion industry.
History
Born in Tokyo Japan, Tamae Hirokawa attended the Bunka Fashion College and studied in the Apparel Design Technique program where she graduated in She joined Issey Miyake Co., Ltd shortly after graduating and quickly rose to a high status in the company, taking control of the Issey Miyake Men and Issey Miyake lines within five years.
In March of , Hirokawa created SOMA DESIGN, her own design firm and started working on multiple different design projects including everything from fashion to sound and art direction and graphic design. The SOMARTA fashion label was launched in the same timeframe and in the time since has quickly become a fast growing name in the industry.
