Als im Juli die erste Kantate von Christoph Graupner ("Süßer Tod" → GWV /09) in Darmstadt im Rahmen eines sonntäglichen Gottesdienstes erklang, ahnte der Komponist selbst vermutlich am wenigsten, dass er bis an sein Lebensende (51 Jahre später!) in Diensten der Darmstädter Landgrafen bleiben und die kleine Residenz im Südhessischen nicht mehr verlassen sollte. Wohl zu Beginn des Jahres war es zur Vertragsunterzeichnung mit seinem neuen Dienstherrn gekommen, und Graupner begann seine Tätigkeit in Darmstadt zunächst als Vize-Kapellmeister unter dem noch amtierenden Wolfgang Carl Briegel.
Erst rückte Graupner an die Spitze der Hofkapelle; fortan war er der Hauptverantwortliche für die Musik am Darmstädter Hof. Er hatte dafür zu sorgen, dass für alle Belange, zu denen Musik benötigt wurde, entsprechende Kompositionen vorhanden und zur Aufführung bereit waren. Neben dem eigentlichen Komponieren hatte Graupner – unterstützt von Mitgliedern der Kapelle – das Aufführungsmaterial, die einzelnen Stimmen, aus der Partitur herauszuschreiben. Life
Born in Hartmannsdorf near Kirchberg in Saxony, Graupner received his first musical instruction from his uncle, an organist named Nicolaus Kuester. Graupner went to the University of Leipzig where he studied law (as did many composers of the time) and then completed his musical studies with Johann Kuhnau, the cantor of the Thom*chule (St. Thomas School).
In , Graupner left Leipzig to play the harpsichord in the orchestra of the Oper am Gänsemarkt in Hamburg under the direction of Reinhard Keiser, alongside George Frideric Handel, then a young violinist. In addition to playing the harpsichord, Graupner composed six operas in Hamburg, some of them in collaboration with Keiser, a popular composer of operas in Germany.

Vom einleitenden Marsch, der einer alten Serenadentradition entspricht, bis zum humorvollen Finalrondo erlebt man vergnügliche Klänge und Rhythmen.
