Jenny and the mexicats biography

BIO  |  JENNY AND THE MEXICATS

Jenny and the mexicats it's a fusion of nationalities and personalities, a band that has a very particular history. The band had its beginnings in Madrid as Pachucos y la princesa, in June

It all started when Icho (double bass) invited Jenny to live in Madrid. Jenny in her 20s had come to the right place. Icho called the best guitarist he knew, Pantera a guitarist with very versatile flamenco technique, they had played together for many years in a rockabilly and punk band in their hometown in Mexico.

Pantera proposed a colleague that he played with in the world of flamenco and he played the cajon. David, an extraordinary Spanish cajon player. And that's how they all got together.

That's how a little adventure of an English girl started and gives rise to Jenny and the Mexicats.

Their first concert was Wonderland, a small festival that generates money to help cancer research in the UK, in August The roots that this new sound carried, made Jenny start to compose a lot and so Jenny and the Mexicats started to rehearse in the place where everyone had met a flamenco tablao, las carboneras.

Jenny began playing the trumpet aged 7 and began singing at 15, alongside teaching herself to play the guitar. Playing both in Jazz and Classical bands as well as orchestras most of her life, she had an ear and a love for music. A fusion of nationalities and personalities, the band&#;s story is a little unusual and more of an accidental occurrence rather than a planned adventure. Jenny & The Mexicats began life as Pachucos y la Princesa in June , when Jenny was invited to Spain by a Double Bass player (Icho) she&#;d met two years previously whilst touring in Madrid. In search of something new, Jenny fell right into place in Spain, decided she wanted to call it home and set about starting a band. Icho contacted the best guitar player he knew &#; Pantera, a flamenco guitarist, whom Icho had known all his life and shared previous bands with, including a a Rockabilly band in Spain. The closest thing to a drummer they could find was David, the Spanish Cajon player extraordinaire, whom Pantera had played with in a Flamenco band. Th

Nothing Wrong with Mixing Cultures: An Interview with Jenny and the Mexicats

By Charlotte Peet06 November,

The tropical, torrential rain has just began to drop in Mexico City and Jenny Ball, from the multicultural Jenny and the Mexicats, is stuck in a cafe waiting for the storm to blow over and the rain to stop. She’s finally back at home after a string of shows that saw the band embark on a two year journey across the US and Europe, with a pit stop at Washington&#;s Tiny Desk in between. Her energy is contagious. She’s a courageous English-born bilingual singer, songwriter, trumpeter and front-women for her red-hot strongly Mexican-influenced Latin pop outfit that also includes Spanish percussionist Bernardos, and Mexicans Pantera on guitar and Icho on double bass.

The independent band has been led by Jenny since they met in a flamenco bar back in in Madrid. Taking the bull by the horns and with a strong sense of self-belief, she plucked up the courage and decided to take the gamble of moving to Mexico City, at a time when she didn’t know a word of Spanish, and give it her all to make something of the band. In her own words “it worked out”. The band have become a pop mus

International band, Jenny and the Mexicats are celebrating their ten years together. To commemorate, as well as to promote their latest album, Mar Abierto, they are touring through México, Europe, and South America.

Double bass player, Luis Diaz, who also goes by Icho, shared the story of how their journey as musicians have brought them together. He said the band started by playing in parties of 15 or 20 people at a time, and grew from that.

“The people have helped us a lot,” Icho said. “They have given us everything, basically. Since we are an independent group, we don’t work with a record label, we depend one hundred percent on the people, by word of mouth, or when we play again in the same city, that there’s more people, that’s what helps.”

The band is formed of vocalist and co-writer Jenny Ball, born and raised in London, England, bassist Icho, guitarist and co-writer Pantera, who are both from México, and Spanish drummer David Gonzalez Bernardos. According to Icho, Ball first met Icho and Pantera in a Tablao where the two played together. Ball was going to compete with her symphony orchestra and they happened to go as a trip to that show. Two years later, Icho and B
