He recorded his first album at age 21, and since then at least another forty original releases, earning several awards, including gold and platinum and one multi-platinum award, for Breezin', awarded in [2]
Named for his maternal grandfather, George Washington Benson, George Benson was born on March 22, , in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. George was the son of unwed teenager Irma Benson and WWII soldier Charles Evans.[3] His father married while at war in France, and his mother married a few years later to Thomas Lee Collier, a guitar novice who taught his seven-year-old step-son to play on a salvaged, repaired ukulele.[1]
