In he began studying history at the University of Gdańsk, where he became involved in opposition against the communist regime. Among others, he cooperated with underground Free Trade Unions and met the future leader of Solidarity Lech Wałęsa.
In , he initiated the Independent Students’ Association (NZS), which became part of the Solidarity movement. He became the chairman of Solidarity at his workplace and a journalist for the weekly published by the union.
After the declaration of martial law in December by General Wojciech Jaruzelski, he went into hiding for a while. Later he worked as a bread salesman, and from to he made a living by manual labour: he specialized in high-altitude work using mountaineering equipment.
At that time, he worked for the underground Solidarity. After a short arrest, he was released under an amnesty for political prisoners announced by Wojciech Jaruzelski.

Early LifeDonald Tusk was born on April 22, , in Gdansk, in the northern part of the Polish People's Republic. His ancestors were from the Kashubian Slavic tribe, who lived in Pomerania. Tusk studied at the History Faculty of Gdansk University from to During his time at university, he began collaborating with local independent trade unions and became involved in the Solidarity movement.
Political Career
In , Tusk co-founded the Independent Movement of Polish Students (Niezalezne Zrzeszenie Studentow Polskich, NZSP). He also worked as an editor for Wydawnitctwo Morskie publishing house and contributed to newspapers such as Pomerania and Samorzadnoua. After martial law was imposed in Poland in , Tusk engaged in underground activities. He co-founded the underground journal "Pshelend Polityczny" in , which promoted free market values and economic liberalism.
