Engenas Lekganyane and the Early ZCC: Oral Texts and Documents
Engenas Lekganyane and the Early ZCC: Oral Texts and Documents Engenas Lekganyane (c) is an extremely difficult individual to study, despite the fact that he is arguably the most important religious figure in southern African history since Robert Moffat. He himself left no written documentation other than his signature. His followers left very few memories as well, and the church did not publish anything about him until This lack of documentation was made worse by the Zion Christian Church’s unwillingness (until very recent times) to allow researchers and journalists access to their members and services. This document gathers together some of the existing files and includes some new materials. In the author’s opinion, substantial amounts of new written files regarding Lekganyane will be found in the future as new avenues are explored. In the meantime, the following files are made available. They come from three separate repositories. First, there are materials discovered by E.K. Lukhaimane for his officially-sponsored research in the late s. Second, there are official South African files that were later collated int
Every Easter weekend, several millions of Zion Christian Church (ZCC) faithful from across southern Africa descend on “Moria city”, the church’s capital in the north of the country, for their annual pilgrimage.
The church, founded by Engenas Lekganyane in , is “the largest indigenous religious movement in southern Africa.” An estimated one in ten South Africans is a member, according to University Allan Anderson, Professor of Theology at University of Birmingham.
There are two branches of the church. The main one is led by the founder’s grandson, Bishop Barnabas Lekganyane (b. ) The breakaway St. Engenas ZCC is headed by his namesake and great-grandson.
Both of these competing branches are headquartered at Moria, two kilometres apart on the same farm on which Engenas died and was buried. They hold separate pilgrimages and other events.
The regular members of the main branch are expected to wear Star badges at all times. For their part the St Engenas members sport Dove badges. Both organisations are similar in theology – a fusion of Christianity and traditional African beliefs. They prohibit drinking, smoking and eating pork, among other practices. The Star section has a dis
The Lekganyanes and Prophecy in the Zion Christian Church
THE LEKGANYANES AND PROPHECY IN THE ZION CHRISTIAN CHURCH BY ALLAN H. ANDERSON (University of Birmingham) The Significance of Zionist Churches in Southern Africa The Zion Christian Church (ZCC) is the largest African initiated church (AIC) in Southern Africa and the second largest in Africa. The Church of Jesus Christ on Earth According to the Prophet Simon Kimbangu (Kimbanguist) of the Congo is the largest AIC in the continent, with an estimated four million members. AICs in their many different forms today constitute about a third of South Africa’s population, some ten million people, of which probably at least three million are in the ZCC. In there were an estimated 1½ million ZCC members, according to government census figures (Allan Anderson & Samuel Otwang, Tumelo: The Faith of African Pentecostals in South Africa, Unisa Press, Pretoria, , p. 15). There are also many other smaller Zionist churches which, together with the ZCC, are a prominent form of African Pentecostalism, at least as far as its phenomena are concerned. Walter J. Hollenweger (The Pentecostals, SCM, London, , p. ) refers to Zionist churches in
