Violinist/Composer and creator of the Global Fusion concept, Dr. L. Subramaniam has performed/recorded Carnatic Classical Music, Western Classical Music and also composed for and conducted major Orchestras, scored for films, collaborated with a wide range of some of the greatest musicians, from different genres of music including jazz, occidental, jugalbandis with North Indian musicians, world music and global fusion. He is a force that is strongly Indian, but universal in nature and approach. At a very young age, he was honoured with the title Violin Chakravarthy (emperor of the violin). Till date, Dr. Subramaniam has produced, performed, collaborated, conducted and recorded close to two hundred recordings. He is also the founder/director of the Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts, a premier institute for musical education, and the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival, the biggest global music festival in India.
L Subramaniam is properly known as Lakshminarayana Subramaniam. He is a renowned character of Indian music. He is an applauded Indian violinist, composer and performer, trained in the classical Carnatic music and Western classical music. Dr L Subramaniam was born into a Tamil musical family and gave his first public performance at the tender age of six. Both his father, V. Lakshminarayana and his mother V. Seethalakshmi were accomplished musicians. Passionate about music, Subramaniam was also dedicated to Science. He studied medicine, after doing M.B.B.S at Madras Medical College and registered as a General Practitioner.

He has experimented with new concepts and different ideas because of his stable foundation in Carnatic Classical, Western Music, Orchestration and rhythm. डॉ. एल. सुब्रमण्यम का जन्म 23 जुलाई को मद्रास (अब चेन्नई), ब्रिटिश भारत में हुआ था। उनके पिता प्रोफेसर वी. लक्ष्मीनारायण अय्यर और माता सीतालक्ष्मी, दोनों ही संगीत के क्षेत्र में प्रतिष्ठित थे। यह कहना गलत नहीं होगा कि संगीत उनके खून में था।
डॉ. सुब्रमण्यम ने मात्र पांच वर्ष की उम्र में संगीत की शिक्षा लेनी शुरू कर दी और छह वर्ष की उम्र में पहली बार सार्वजनिक प्रस्तुति दी। उनके पिता उनके पहले गुरु थे, जिन्होंने उन्हें वायलिन वादन में पारंगत किया। उनके परिवार में संगीत का गहरा प्रभाव था। उनके चाचा रामनाड राघवन और रामनाड कृष्णन भी प्रसिद्ध संगीतज्ञ थे।
उनके भाई-बहन भी संगीत में अपनी पहचान बना चुके हैं। उनके भाई एल. शंकर (शेनकर) और एल. वैद्यनाथन ने भी भारतीय संगीत में अपना योगदान दिया है।
