Mahatma Gandhi was a prominent Indian political leader who was a leading figure in the campaign for Indian independence. He employed non-violent principles and peaceful disobedience as a means to achieve his goal. He was assassinated in , shortly after achieving his life goal of Indian independence. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was the preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement in British-ruled India. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October to a Hindu Modh Baniya family in Porbandar (also known as Sudamapuri), a coastal town on the Kathiawar Peninsula and then part of the small princely state of Porbandar in the Kathiawar Agency of the Indian Empire. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.
Gandhi famously led Indians in challenging the British-imposed salt tax with the km ( mi) Dandi Salt March in , and later in calling for the British to Quit India in He was imprisoned for many years, upon many occasions, in both South Africa and India. One of Gandhis major strategies, first in South Africa and then in India, was uniting Muslims and Hindus to work together in opposition to British imperialism. In –22 he won strong Muslim support for his leadership in the Khilafat Movement to support the historic Ottoman Caliphate. By , that Muslim support had largely evaporated.

It is here that he first experiences racial discrimination, which leads him to fight for civil rights for Indians in South Africa. Gandhi launches the Satyagraha (nonviolent resistance) movement in response to the Transvaal governments discriminatory legislation against Indians in South Africa. Gandhi returns to India and joins the Indian National Congress, a political party fighting for Indian independence from British rule.
