The Boys by Ron Howard &#; Clint Howard

The Boys is told from the combined perspectives of actor Clint Howard and his better known older brother, Academy Award winning director, Ron. It looks at their life growing up in the entertainment business and how their parents’ frank, loving, simple Oklahoma upbringing shepherded them through the excesses, temptations and dangers the industry exerts on most people. Ron is quite frank about how lucky he is to have grown up with his soul intact after being a working actor since before he could even write his name and, even though Clint battled years of addiction, his parents’ example seems mostly to have rubbed off on him too.

The pair talk about their lives up until the years when Ron became a truly successful Hollywood player behind the camera – from the ‘Andy Griffith Show’ (Ron) and various bit parts (Clint) through to American Graffiti and ‘Happy Days’.

If you’re curious about the Howard brothers’ young life and what it was like for kids their age in the movie capital of the world, then you’re in the right place. Unfortunately, though, The Boys is not outstanding quality writing. For all the great stories they have, the Ho

Opie / Ron Howard

What happened to Andy Taylor's first wife (Opie's mother)?

All we were ever told is that she died and that was told us on the pilot for "The Andy Griffith Show" which appeared on "The Danny Thomas Show". Opie's pet turtle , Wilford, was stepped on and killed by ""Mrs. Balford"" out in front of the ice cream parlor and he wants Andy to arrest her for 'murder', give her a fair trial and "hang her." Andy tries to help Opie deal with the loss by talking about how it was when Opie's 'ma' died. Opie looks to Andy and says, "Who stepped on Ma?" That was the only time Andy's first wife was mentioned.

Besides the pilot, she is also mentioned in "Wedding Bells for Aunt Bee." Opie asks Andy, "Did you and Ma have that kind of love?" Andy replies, "Yes, son, we did."

We never do learn her name, or anything else about her, but there are a few hints here and there.

In the pilot episode, Andy reminds Opie, "I lost your mom when you was just the least little speck of a baby." Of course, there are lots of things in the pilot episode that changed before the first episode, but I'd consider this official since it established from the very beginning that Andy was a widower r

Ron and Clint wrote this book to pay homage to their beloved mother and father, Jean Speegle Howard and Rance Howard, who selflessly guided their sons through the ins and outs of show business while keeping the boys grounded in everyday life.

Ron Howard: From Mayberry to the Moonand Beyond

This author had no access to Ron Howard or anyone close to him, so she simply rehashes quotes from articles and videos she watched. It's all written like a high school term paper with confusing tense changes and no attributions for where she got some of the information. While she claims to have interviewed three dozen people who worked with Howard, there's little evidence of it here. She skips entire years in his life, doesn't go in depth on many projects (assuming she couldn't find others articles?), provides nothing new about his famous TV years, and over and over repeats how nice everyone thinks he is. It all makes for a pretty plain, boring read with no insight into the star or his private life. It's basically one giant, long, simplistic Wikipedia entry that focuses completely on his filmographyand he deserves much better.
