The best biography you'll find on this incredibly interesting woman.
Like other episodes of "The American Experience" on DVD, this one does not have captions of any sort. This is a more serious problem than usual since the music is too loud and often overwhelms the narration. Some tweaking with my TV's sound was necessary to make it easier to watch.
This film is a one-hour biography of the life of Annie Oakley. For the most part, it bears little similarity to the Hollywood biography of her starring Barbara Stanwyck. This isn't surprising, as Hollywood during the 30s and 40s really wasn't focused on the real story and they usually jazzed it up by embellishing heavily in regard to the facts. In this case, the real facts are more exciting and interesting than the Hollywood version, as Oakley did lead an exciting life--with a rags to riches story that really would make a great film (and is barely alluded to in the Barbara Stanwyck film from ). Very interesting and well done--with lots of great archival footage and pictures along with the many interviews. Well worth seeing--and, surprisingly, a nice love story that I didn&
Annie Oakley (Phoebe Ann Mozee, sometimes spelled Mosee or Moses) was born to Quaker parents in Ohio. She had six brothers and sisters. When she was six years old her father died due to exposure to snow and freezing weather. Her mother remarried and had another child, then became a widow again. She could not take care of all the children, so she sent Annie to live on a "poor farm". From there she was loaned out to work for a family, but they were very cruel to her. She referred to them as "the wolves". Sometimes they would lock her out of the house when it was snowing outside. She spent two agonizing years with them, then returned to the county poor farm.

Annie taught herself to shoot a gun, and she became such a good shot she was able to hunt small animals and sell them. When she had accumulated $, she gave it to her mother to pay off the mortgage on the farm.
One of the favorite pastimes of that age was attending shooting matches. Frank Butler, an Irish immigrant, was one of the sharpshooters.A match was made for hi

Described as "the greatest woman rifle shot the world has ever produced," Annie Oakley thrilled audiences of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show with her daring shooting feats. Over time she became an American legend. But that legend had little to do with the real Annie Oakley. This probing AMERICAN EXPERIENCE production examines the dramatic life of a uniquely American icon whose complex character manifested many of the paradoxes of the nation.
