What I learnt at the Institute of Archaeology was the importance of community. Almost 28 years ago I arrived as a fresh-faced teenager from Lancashire with no real experience or knowledge of archaeology. When I turned up on the first day of enrolment, I was surrounded by at least other eager students of all age ranges. It was all quite overwhelming, but I remember the atmosphere, there was an excitable buzz from people with a hunger to learn about the past.
The Institute is quite uniquely placed; although it sits as a department within UCL it really is its own little island, a purpose-built building, nestled neatly within the leafy squares of Bloomsbury. Out of all the departments at UCL this is its strength – I remember how jealous other UCL friends were that all archaeology students, undergraduate or graduate, co-existed, socialised and worked together in this melting pot of seven floors located on the northern end of Gordon Square. Others were taken aback by how accessible the teaching staff were and how none of the archaeology students could have ever survived without the calm guiding hand of the irreplaceable Judy Medrington. The latest archaeologist to come under our spotlight is Raksha Dave, another Time Team regular, and member of the team for the current series.
Brief Bio:
Raksha has been a professional archaeologist for 12 years and is currently the Project Manager for Dig Ventures and a Senior Archaeologist and presenter for Time Team. Most of her field experience has been based in the commercial sector in London and has worked on numerous projects such as St Mary Spital and the Blossom’s Inn site, Gresham Street. She is now in her 10th year working for Time Team as a Senior Archaeologist and has excavated and supervised various sites in the UK and abroad.
Raksha has also worked in the public sector in local government focusing on education and communities. Her interests firmly lie in participation, advocacy and education through archaeology.

Raksha Dave is a Field Archaeologist, Public Archaeologist and Broadcaster. In , Raksha graduated from the UCL Institute of Archaeology, having already excavated on research projects in the UK, Puerto Rico and Texas. In , she secured her first position as a commercial field archaeologist based in London where she worked predominantly. During this time she also worked on various research projects around the world including the Catalhoyuk Research Project in Turkey. In between all of her time excavating Raksha realised her passion for working with communities and the public whilst employed by a local authority in London; commissioning, developing and delivering public services in education and early years as part of a major government funded initiative. This is reflected in her later work when she returned back to the heritage sector. રક્ષાબહેન દવેનો પ્રથમ કાવ્યસંગ્રહ ‘સૂરજમુખી’ માં પ્રકાશિત થયો. કાવ્યસંગ્રહની પ્રસ્તાવનામાં કવિ સુન્દરમે તેમને ‘આધુનિક મીરાં’ તરીકે ઓળખાવ્યાં છે. તેમની પાસેથી ભક્તિનાં અનેક પદો-ગીતો મળ્યાં છે. ‘નિશિગંધા’ (), ‘ગુલમોર’ (), ‘અજવાસ’ (), ‘આહ્લાદ’ (), ‘સ્રગ્ધરા’ () અને ‘શારદા’ () તેમના કાવ્યસંગ્રહો છે. ‘ગુલમોર’ને ગુજરાતી સાહિત્ય પરિષદ તરફથી ભગિની નિવેદિતા પુરસ્કાર મળ્યો છે.
