When a Shadowy Maine Estate Was an Epicenter of Psychics and Pychedelics

By Andy O’Brien

One Sunday afternoon in August , the world-renowned British author Aldous Huxley stepped out of a small commuter plane in Owls Head and climbed into a taxi bound for Rockport. The year-old novelist and multiple Nobel nominee was struck by the beauty of the rockbound coast, but he hadn’t come to Maine for a vacation. That spring, at a gathering hosted by a well-heeled acquaintance in New York — a scion of the Astor family — Huxley had met a young scientist named Dr. Henry Puharich, a captain in the Army Medical Corps and a parapsychologist interested in extrasensory perception and the clinical application of psychedelic drugs. The charming doctor had excitedly described experiments he’d conducted, before his army hitch, with mediums, telepaths, and psychics, all at a remote compound on the Maine coast, a research facility he called the Round Table Laboratory of Experimental Electrobiology.

Huxley, best known for his dystopian novel Brave New World, had the year before published what would become arguably his second-most influential work, a book-length essay called Doors of Perception,

Andrija Puharich (February 19, – January 3, ) — born Henry Karel Puharić — was a medical and parapsychological researcher, medical inventor, physician and author.

He was a well educated man, a medical doctor who dedicated himself to investigate the power of the mind. He studied the people that could use just their minds to manipulate matter, the healers and the telepaths.
He was mostly known as being the researcher who brought metal bender Uri Geller to the United States to have him studied under laboratory conditions at the Stanford Research Institute. He also wrote the book ‘Uri’ about his unusual experiences with this controversial man. It is about Uri’s amazing abilities, but also about the extra-terrestrials that contacted them and the Ufo’s they witnessed together. Obviously, the book was received with much controversy but it never stopped him seeking out the unknown and going out on a limb.

He was also an extremely intelligent man and besides researcher, an inventor. In the late sixties, he invented and developed electronic devices that, through skin and bone resonance let the deaf hear. In the late eighties, he worked on a method for split

He studied at Northwestern University (B.A., ) and Northwestern University Medical School (M.B. and M.D., ). He developed an interest in psychic phenomena in and the following year set up the Round Table Foundation, Glen Cove, Maine, to study the physico-chemical basis for paranormal phenomena. However, it was after his period of service in the army () that his true interests emerged.

Through the s, Puharich was an independent scientist and inventor operating with the funds and patronage of various funding sources including the Mind Science Foundation, San Antonio, Texas; the Belk Research Foundation, New York City; the Consciousness Research Foundation; and various industrial and scientific organizations. He holds some 50 patents. He did both psychological and non-parapsychological work; his several books reflect his exploration of hallucinogens and ESP.

In April he decided to change directions and devote himself fully to his first love, parapsychological investigation. This decision was stimulated by his brief contact in with the Bra
