Habría nacido en Cuauhmixtitlan y fue hijo de un mexica y una princesa de Culhuacán. Justamente por la vía materna contó con ascendencia tolteca y ello, oportunamente, fue determinante para acceder al cargo de Tlatoani.
Su nombre, en el idioma náhuatl, originario de los mexicas, refiere puñado de cañas, manojo de cañas, o aquel que sujeta cañas en la mano, ahora bien, ese no habría sido su nombre original, lo adoptó para rodearse de grandeza y que ello acompañase su posición. Se habría llamado originalmente Xilechoz.
