Still Lifes and Genre Paintings
Chardin married in , and began to receive commissions from rich patrons. As he became more successful, he decided to paint figures. He did not choose grand and historical subjects, but instead rather like his simple still-life subjects, depicted ordinary people, usually in domestic roles. These "genre" scenes became very popular with the viewers at the Paris Salon and Chardin soon had a rich international clientele. Less wealthy clients bought engravings of his work. In this way he reached an extremely wide public and became recognized as one of the best genre painters of the age. Following the death of his wife in , he married a widow in In the s he returned to painting still-lifes, both kitchen objects and also game subjects. Jean-Baptiste Simeon Chardin was born in Paris. He was the son of a carpenter, and the environment of craftsmen and humble middle-class people into which he was born did much to determine his life and art. Similarly, his study of seventeenth-century Flemish and Dutch genre paintings was far more important to his artistic development than the academic training he received from Pierre Jacques Cazes, Nicolas Coypel, and Jean Baptiste Vanloo. After having attracted attention at an exhibition Chardin became a member of the Royal Academy in Thereafter his work received the appreciation it deserved and the favor of the king, who granted him an apartment in the Louvre and a pension.
From until , Chardin painted scenes of middle-class life to which he brought a special comprehension, and in which children play an important role. He then devoted himself principally to still life and finally, between and , he drew portraits in pastel that are among the finest of their kind. Chardin was first of all a craftsman, but he was enough a man of his time to have absorbed the subtle tonality and delicate texture of French painting of the era

Jean Siméon Chardin est né en dans un milieu d’artisans. Il fut l’élève du peintre de tableaux historiques Pierre-Jacques Cazes (), de Noël Nicolas Coypel () et de Carle Van Loo (). Sa vie se déroule exclusivement à Paris et est entièrement consacrée à la peinture.

Les débuts
Jean-Siméon Chardin naît à Paris le 2 novembre , il est le fils du maître menuisier et fabricant de billard, Jean Chardin et de Jeanne-Françoise David sa seconde épouse. Chardin est très tôt attiré par la peinture et étudie probablement avec le peintre Noël-Nicolas Coypel, un ami de la famille.
Il signe un contrat de mariage en avec Marguerite Saintard, fille d'un riche marchand parisien que Chardin épouse en , le couple aura deux enfants un fils prénommé Jean-Pierre né en et une fille Marguerite-Agnès née en En Chardin est reçu maître peintre de l'Académie de Saint-Luc après un apprentissage dans l'atelier du peintre Pierre-Jacques Cazes, il apprend le dessin et la peinture. Malheureusement il peine beaucoup dans ce domaine et a de médiocre résultat. Chardin se tourne alors vers la nature morte sa véritable vocation qu'il découvre après l'étude d'un lapin mort. Chardin veut alors peindre avec la plus grande vérité ce qu'il voit et veut oublier tout ce qu'il a appris ou vu.
