M. Šašek at the "Městosvět" exhibition in Prague

From 10th April to 19th June the Prague gallery Villa Pellé hosts an exhibition of illustrations produced by Miroslav Šašek for his books This is London and This is Hong Kong. Just a few steps away from Hradčanská metro station visitors may take a stroll through the city and enjoy its sights not only as they were once perceived by Šašek himself but also through the eyes of contemporary children’s book illustrators. Exhibits include Michaela Kukovičová’s illustrations for a new publication entitled This is Prague in which she and author Olga Černá explore the question of how Šašek might have seen modern-day Prague, were he here to enjoy the city today. As an added bonus, visitors may browse through a large selection of books on display at the gallery, or else purchase copies for themselves.

Miroslav Sasek
Miroslav Sasek () (or Meer-oh-slahf Sah-sek as pronounced, and written Ŝaŝek, but best known by his drawn signature: ‘M. Sasek’). Miroslav Sasek was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, November , to parents who generally discouraged his early interest in drawing and painting and pushed him instead into training as an architect. At the onset of the communist coup in , aged 32, Miroslav Sasek left Prague for Munich, where from he worked for Radio Free Europe.
On a short holiday to Paris and enthralled by the city and its history, Miroslav Sasek realised that distracted parents with children in tow rarely seemed to interpret the city to their off-spring, and that sketches of his surroundings he was making might best be used as illustrations for a children’s book. ‘This Is Paris’ () was born.

Miroslav Šašek
Miroslav Šašek was born on the 16th November in the Prague district of Žižkov. He was an architecture graduate and studied drawing and painting with Czech landscape artist Otakar Blažíček, and after completing his studies he provided drawings for newspapers and illustrated a large number of books, as well as designing puppets in collaboration with his first wife, Jindřiška.
In he moved to Paris to study at the École des Beaux Arts, and when the Communists came to power in what was then Czechoslovakia he made the decision not to return to his homeland. He earned a living as a graphic artist (in advertising) and architect, and from he was employed in the Czech section of Radio Free Europe in Munich.
In he returned to Paris, beginning work on a children’s illustrated guide to that city – This is Paris – which was published in and succeeded by similar books on London (also ), Rome (), New York (), Edinburgh (), Munich (), Venice (), San Francisco (), Israel (), Cape Canaveral (), Ireland (), Hong Kong (), Greece (), Texas (), the United Nations (), Washington D.C. (), Australia () and historical Britain ().

Miroslav Šašek
Miroslav Šašek was born on 18th November in the Prague district of Žižkov. His mother, Anna Marie (née Nováková), born on 17th January , was the daughter of a postal clerk. She had studied typing and shorthand at secretarial school and then worked as a correspondence clerk. On 19th September she married accountant Alois Šašek, who was born on 18th June into an ancient family of millers that since had owned (and in fact still owns) the celebrated Lucký Watermill near Chodovlice in central Bohemia.

On 15th October , at the age of just 41, Alois Šašek died in Sedlčany, where he had been working as the manager of an insurance office. Anna Marie now remained alone with two children, the ten-year-old Miroslav and his six-year-old sister Věra, and she returned with them to Prague. In Sedlčany Miroslav attended local primary school, where at the end of his fifth year of study () he gained grades one – the highest on the scale – in all subjects.
