BIOGRAPHY
Born in Vienna but raised in Switzerland to escape Nazi Germany, Maximilian Schell began acting at the age of 12 and quickly built his reputation by starring in various German-language films and series. His admiration for Shakespeare allowed him to reveal himself in the theater in roles like Richard III and Hamlet .

In , he made his Hollywood debut starring in The Ball of the Cursed alongside Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift . But it was with Judgment at Nuremberg that he experienced international success, receiving the Oscar for Best Actor in He subsequently moved on to European projects, starring in The Prisoners of Altona () by Vittorio De Sica and Topkapi () by Jules Dassin . Moving behind the camera, he directed Erste Liebe in , which won several awards.

He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the American film Judgment at Nuremberg, his second acting role in Hollywood. While he was a child, his family fled to Switzerland in when Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany, and they settled in Zurich. After World War II ended, Schell took up acting or directing full-time. He appeared in numerous German films, often anti-war, before moving on to Hollywood.

Schell was top billed in a number of Nazi-era themed films, as he could speak both English and German.
