Beniowski – Madagascar's Polish king
Human settlement began on the island of Madagascar several centuries before the Birth of Christ by aborigines arriving in outrigger canoes from Borneo, Taiwan, Australia and other exotic places. It boasts the world's weirdest wildlife, because it broke off from India 88 million years ago. Another of its unique claims to fame was that a swashbuckling Polish adventurer once served as that nation's king.
Maurycy August Beniowski () lost both parents while still in his teens, left home at 16 and went on to become one of Poland's most colorful figures. He enlisted in the Austrian army, received the rank of major in a Polish cavalry regiment and in pursuit of his lost inheritance raided a manor house in Austrian-occupied Slovakia. Pursued by the law, he fled the country.
Beniowski joined Kazimierz Puaski and other freedom-fighters in the Confederation of Bar, an armed revolt against Poland's pro-Russian King Stanisaw August, the lapdog of Russia's Tsarina Catherine the Great.
