As a teenager he moved with his family to South Africa where he began to read and write in English, later adopting it as his major creative language, though he made his literary debut as a poet with a volume of verse in Hebrew She'eriot Me'elohim ["Remnants of God"] (coll ).
Beginning with his first professional short fiction sale, "Alienation and Love in the Hebrew Alphabet" in ChiZine (see Online Magazines) for April , his narratives frequently juxtapose various literary traditions and in the postmodern manner hybridize genres, conventions, tropes and characters to arrive at early twenty-first-century Fantastika of both an entertaining and transgressive nature. Tidhar's literary strategy repeatedly relies on the recycling of stereotypes and Clichés drawn from classical Pulp sf and detective fiction, traditional Mythologies and contemporary popular culture. From Kibbutz to Career: A Conversation with Lavie Tidhar
Raised on a kibbutz in Israel, Lavie Tidhar began his world travels at fifteen, living in South Africa, the UK, Laos, and Vanuatu. At twenty-two he published a collection of poetry, and he had his first fiction stories published at twenty-seven. In , the first volume of The Apex Book of World SF came out, edited by Tidhar, as well as dark fantasy novel The Tel Aviv Dossier, cowritten with Nir Yaniv.
Tidhar’s debut solo novel came out in The Bookman, first in the literary steampunk Bookman series (including ’s Camera Obscura and ’s The Great Game). In , Osama, a “film noir, non-fiction, alternative history, and international thriller,” won him his first major genre award for a novel: a World Fantasy Award. In he moved to London, the same year his The Violent Century was published (alternative history cold war espionage and superheroes), followed by ’s A Man Lies Dreaming (dark, literary noir thriller with a twist).
