Bettis entered the prestigious halls of Notre Dame as a wide-eyed football phenom determined to turn his NFL dreams into reality. He transformed into a star with the Fighting Irish. After playing in a limited role in his freshman year, Bettis bulldozed his way to 1, scrimmage yards and a record-breaking 20 total touchdowns, the most in a single season in Notre Dame history. Bettis' record still stands today. Bettis delivered again in his junior year, leading the Fighting Irish to victory in the Cotton Bowl. Bettis entered the NFL Draft after his junior year.

"To think a little fat kid from Detroit who had never played football until high school, to think that I could ascend to this level, this is something that I never dreamed of," Bettis said. "My goal was to get to college. And once I got to college and realized the opportunity there, it was to earn a living and help my family, and so at no point was there ever a time when I thought to myself that I had the ability to get to the Hall of Fame. That was never the idea.
"And to now actually be here, it is humbling because to the greatest man to ever play this game, to see Jim Brown there, to know that I am now a teammate of the greatest running back to ever play the game, that's a special and humbling moment."
Bettis, who played 13 seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Rams both in Los Angeles and St. Louis, finished his year career with 13, career yards, two first-team All-Pro selections and a Super Bow
